Every week in England, almost a million people will attend a football match. In different communities across the country, people part with their hard-earned cash to watch 22 grown men kick a ball around. Football is our national sport and, for good or for bad, it is one of the things that people first associate with England. Despite this however, there are questions which are rarely answered about English football;
Where does all this passion come from? Is football essentially a tribal ritual? Is it corrupt? Do the lower leagues have the same passion as the Premiership? Which clubs have the best fans? Does football in England still have a soul in the age of foreign investment and the ‘prawn sandwich’ supporters? Is the pie the perfect footy snack, and (most importantly) who makes the best one?!
I answer all these questions and more in my book “92 Pies”. 92 Pies was an epic mission in which I successfully watched a game (and ate a pie) at every one of the 92 Football League stadiums in the 2008/2009 season. It took me 9 months to watch 138 hours of live football, spending over £3000 and driving the equivalent mileage of London to Sydney and back.
